Can the current Bus Transit System Support Middle Housing?
Airway Heights, WA
With the current housing shortage in Spokane County, it is critical to figure out where to build new housing, and part of that is identifying where existing utilities and services are, and where they would need to be expanded. The map below shows current housing areas in Medical Lake WA, and how close bus rapid transit is to residential areas. The Spokane Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) stops are shown below with both eight mile and quarter mile buffers, as those are the distances people are willing to walk or bike to transit stops. As you can see, the housing lots by the ORV park in the north west corner of the city will need additional services.
All data was acquired from the Medical Lake GIS open access website. Tools used to perform the analysis included running buffers around existing transit stops at both eight and quarter mile distances. Those buffers zones were dissolved for an easier visual and all services such as splash pads, parks, cooling centers and pools were included to show access via the BRT. Currently, there is no BRT access to the public pool which, should be addressed.
